Lords of the Manor dinner

narrowboat

Manor House hotel, Castle Combe - Putting Green

Why a golfing holiday in the Cotswolds could be the best you’ve ever had

With its gorgeous rolling vistas and expansive gardens, the Cotswolds has to rank among the UK’s undoubted green idylls, all of which makes it an unsurprising choice of base for a golfing holiday. However, that a golfing holiday in the Cotswolds may seem obvious should not detract from its similarly obvious charms.

Here at Rosehill Travel, we are delighted to be able to offer luxury golfing breaks to the Cotswolds for those who wish to tee off in some of the country’s most astonishing rural surroundings. Those heading to the South Cotswolds, for example, can find one of the South West’s finest golf courses when they stop off at the Manor House Hotel and Golf Club in Castle Combe.

What greets visitors to this part of the Cotswolds – other than the delightful 14th century Manor House Hotel itself that provides more than hospitable overnight accommodation – is a truly breathtaking golfing landscape that will challenge both novice and experienced players of the game. For those ardent golfers that aren’t distracted by the 365 surrounding acres of fabulous Cotswolds countryside, this is a course that continually presents new and interesting challenges.

From the mature oak and beech trees that line the fairways, to the delectable River Bybrook, there’s always something to make you feel close to nature when you make this course the focal point of your golfing holiday in the Cotswolds. Nor do par threes get much more exciting than the 17th at Burton Brook.

However, any past visitor to this course knows that the award-winning Manor House Hotel has more than enough to enthral even those with little interest in golf. This is an establishment, after all, famed for its combination of exceptional service, pleasing surroundings and fine dining, as is rightly expected of any self-respecting stately home.

All of this is before one considers the immensely picturesque Castle Combe itself, with its clematis-clad dwellings, old water pump and 19th century Butter Cross that have made it a fixture of the movies for directors seeking a glimpse of the rapidly diminishing old England. Even a mere 20 minutes away can be found the jaw-dropping and always happening city of Bath, a World Heritage Site with all of the historic charms and attractions that such a status implies.

Don’t hesitate to contact Rosehill Travel today about this or any other golfing holiday in the Cotswolds, tailored to your own highest expectations.

Delight in a spa break in Cheltenham this summer

When you want to get away from it all, relax and stimulate yourself, there can be few better options than a spa break in Cheltenham. This large spa town is a historical jewel of leafy Gloucestershire, serving up no shortage of attractions for the culture vulture, sports fan or avid traveller.
Cheltenham is nationally and internationally renowned for events like Cheltenham Literature Festival, Cheltenham Jazz Festival and Greenbelt, and that’s without mentioning the must-not-miss race of the British steeplechase horse racing calendar with which Cheltenham will always be synonymous, the Gold Cup. But even if you aren’t in town at the same time as any of these remarkable events, there are still so many fun things to see and do.
Simply walking around the town, you can’t fail to marvel at the astonishing Regency architecture that has led Cheltenham to be described as “the most complete regency town in England”. Outstanding examples of this architectural style include the Municipal Offices and Cheltenham Synagogue. But theatre fans are also well-served by such venues as the Parabola Arts Centre, the Bacon, the Playhouse and the Everyman.
What if you want to take in some visual art? Well, just pop into the Cheltenham Art Gallery & Museum, which holds some of the finest decorative arts pieces that the Arts & Crafts Movement produced. You may or may not also be aware that the English composer Gustav Theodore Holst was born here. His life is commemorated by the Holst Birthplace Museum, where you can find the personal belongings – including the piano – of the man best known for composing The Planets.
Then, there are those festivals. Embracing everything from music and jazz to science and literature, they give the visitor on a spa break in Cheltenham access to a truly astonishing range of activities. Adding to the potential confusion is the fact that two sporting events are also frequently referred to as “Cheltenham Festival” or “the Festival”: the Cheltenham Cricket Festival and the Cheltenham Festival for National Hunt racing. Needless to say that both are well worth attending.
As you walk around Cheltenham on your spa break, consider where you may have seen these buildings before. It was here where the 1968 British drama film if… was filmed, for example, while the town was also a key filming location for the 1970s and 1980s BBC2 sitcom Butterflies. In more recent years, it was even where the 2007 film The Full Monteverdi was partly filmed.
Whether you do or do not care about Cheltenham’s links to the worlds of film and TV, you are sure to care about the town itself. There is simply nowhere more delightful to spend a short spa break, and Rosehill Travel is happy to put a package together to ensure that you see all of the most important sights.

Bluebells in Foxholes Wood
